Construction continues on the Belmont Gravity Pipeline (BGP) along Shoreway Road in Belmont and San Carlos. SVCW’s contractor partner, Shea Parsons Joint Venture (SPJV), and SPJV’s subcontractor Power Engineering Construction (PEC), continues to make progress with Phase 3 of the construction work. The vertical shaft, referenced as Receiving Shaft 3 (RS-3), has been completed and temporarily covered to allow for traffic to resume as PEC transitions to Phase 4 of the project, which includes construction of Jacking Shaft 3 (JS-3) As PEC begins construction of JS-3, Vadnais Trenchless will be mobilizing the microtunnel boring machine (a smaller, unoccupied version of the trenchless tunnel excavation equipment used for the gravity tunnel project) to Jacking Shaft 4 (JS-4) to resume the installation of the BGP from JS-4 to RS-4. SPJV continues to ensure consistent coordination with the SVCW public outreach team and neighboring businesses to limit traffic impacts.
At the Redwood City Pump Station (RCPS), SPJV continues structural work at the pump station wet well and screening structure. SPJV successfully completed hydrotesting the exterior walls and wet well walls, and has begun hydrotesting of the A-side wet well at the new pump station. Hydrotesting relies on keeping water in the newly cured concrete structures and channels for observation of any leaks that would require correction. At the screening building, efforts are underway to build the infill walls for the building. Infill walls are non-load bearing, supportive walls that are constructed within a reinforced concrete framework, and serve to close the space between interior and exterior walls. With the rebar for the infills in place, SPJV poured concrete for the infill walls, and stripped the formwork once the concrete had cured to sufficient strength. SPJV is in the process of erecting falsework for the new screening facility channel deck. Miscellaneous work at the electrical building includes installation of the electrical building rollup doors and AC units on the building roof.
Structural and electrical improvements are progressing at the Menlo Park Pump Station (MPPS). At the B-side wet well, SPJV continues to remove existing pumps, motors and associated piping, and replacing them with new equipment. Additional work at the wet well includes replacement of foul air ducts and installing concrete coatings in the wet well and influent channel. Simultaneously, PEC is installing new air relief valves (ARVs) and vacuum relief valves (VRVs) on the existing Segment 1 Force Main between the MPPS and the RCPS. The shutdown and installation activities related to replacement of existing equipment are being conducted with a high level of coordination between the contractor and SVCW’s Operations and Maintenance team. SPJV completed painting of the electrical room, and is installing conduits and power centers.
