After Salus completed its first drive late-March, the Barnard-Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) crew began disassembling the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at the Inner Bair Island Shaft retrieval site.
Completed major section removal includes:
- Middle shield cover – during tunneling this shield acts as a protective structure for the workers. It also functions as a temporary support structure so concrete segment can be installed while Salus tunnels forward.
- Screw conveyor – assists in efficiently transporting excavated soil onto a conveyor belt that sends it out behind Salus
- Cutter head – the front segment of Salus responsible for cutting and excavating through the soil
